Nine Years of GST: How Tax Reform Transformed India's Consumer Electronics Industry

As India's Goods and Services Tax marks nine years since its rollout, industry voices are reflecting on how the reform reshaped business operations nationwide. In a recent feature by United News of India, Sahil Aggarwal, Co-founder of Robotek India, shared his perspective on how GST has impacted the consumer electronics sector specifically.
Aggarwal pointed out that before GST, the industry dealt with a patchwork of indirect taxes, state-level levies, and fragmented warehousing that drove up logistics costs and created inconsistent pricing across different markets. GST helped dismantle these structural inefficiencies, allowing electronics companies to build leaner inventory systems and stronger nationwide distribution networks.
He also noted the broader economic impact, citing how GST collections have grown substantially since FY18, alongside a major expansion in the registered taxpayer base — both signs of increasing formalisation across Indian industry. For consumers, this shift has translated into a more consistent buying experience nationwide, with purchase decisions now shaped more by product quality and after-sales service than by regional price gaps.
As Aggarwal put it, GST has evolved "beyond a tax reform into a catalyst for operational efficiency, organised retail and greater consumer trust."
The article also featured perspectives from Vishal Devanath of SMERGERS, who highlighted ongoing compliance and cash-flow challenges faced by MSMEs — underscoring that while GST has strengthened India's formal economy, there's still room to simplify compliance and speed up refunds for smaller businesses.
